Our Legacy

In 1888, L.L. Chamberlain was admitted to practice law in California and hung his shingle in the Gold Rush town of Auburn, California. Since 1888, the firm has been open for business, and now ranks as the third oldest law firm in California.

In 1948, a young attorney new to Placer County, F. L. Sinclair, graduated from Boalt Hall at the University of California, Berkeley, and accepted an associate position in the Chamberlain firm as his first employment. Several years later, Mr. Sinclair departed the Chamberlain firm, relocated to Roseville, California, and founded what has become the oldest continuously practicing law firm in Roseville.

Russell P. Baldo, a fifth generation Placer County resident, joined L. L. Chamberlain’s son and grandsons, all of whom practiced law, as an associate in the firm in 1974. By 1980, Mr. Baldo was admitted as a partner, becoming the first attorney outside the Chamberlain family to be so honored. Mr. Baldo continues to practice law today, emphasizing estate planning, probate, wills, trusts and conservatorships.

Later still, in 1985, attorney Randall R. Wilson joined forces with members of the Sinclair family in Roseville, including F. L. Sinclair’s son, Robert F. (Bob) Sinclair. No newcomer himself, Mr. Wilson was born and raised in Placer County, attended Placer High School and is proud of a family that came to the area in the Gold Rush and has roots in the community back at least four generations. Since 1985, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Sinclair have practiced law in Placer County and the surrounding communities, each emphasizing in special areas of the law.

With this much history, it was only a matter of time – alright, a long time, but still only time – before these two leading Placer County firms joined forces. Precipitated by the death of Paul H. Chamberlain, the last member of the Chamberlain family practicing law in Placer County, the Roseville firm of Sinclair & Wilson and the Auburn firm of Chamberlain & Baldo merged to form the law offices of Sinclair, Wilson, Baldo & Chamberlain.

Although it’s historic founders are all deceased, the firm started by L. L. Chamberlain in 1888 and F. L. Sinclair in 1955 continues the practice of law throughout northern California. Today, each member of the firm emphasizes unique practice skills and concentrates in specialized areas of the law, including business, real estate, estate planning, trusts, wills and probate, taxation, and civil litigation. As a testimonial to the quality of their work, clients of the firm include sitting and retired judges, lawyers with legal practices of their own, elected officials and prominent business owners throughout the foothill’s and professional communities.

While many attorneys and law firms advertise success, not all actually deliver it. To acknowledge it delivers what it promises, the firm has been designated as “preeminent” for professional skills and ethics by Martindale-Hubbell, a recognized national attorney evaluation firm. This is the highest ranking given to any lawyer or law firm in the nation.
